Train Your Staff
One of the best ways you can prevent incidents in the workplace is by ensuring your employees are properly trained. Make sure they know what to do in case of an accident, and how to prevent accidents in the first place.
Make sure all employees know how to operate and use any machines, tools, or chemicals in the workplace. Proper use of work equipment can better prevent safety hazards.
Hire Competent Workers
You might have a few job openings that you are looking to fill quickly. Hiring someone to fill a position quickly may lead to hiring an incompetent employee.
This poses a threat to workplace safety. It is important to avoid quick hires to prevent the chance of selecting an incompetent employee who will likely be more susceptible to injuries and accidents.
You want to hire the best people who are competent enough to do a job correctly and safely.
Enforce Safety
Lead by example. Let your employees see how much safety means to you by striving to always enforce safety rules and regulations.
Help your employees to understand that safety matters most when doing their job. DO NOT allow employees to assume getting the work done takes priority over safety.
Post Signs
Signs help people to take caution. It reminds them of potential risks when in certain areas or using equipment, machines, and chemicals etc.
Be sure that you have the necessary signs posted throughout the workplace. If there is a wet floor, place a wet floor sign in that area. If someone needs safety glasses while using a tool, post a sign about wearing safety glasses when that tool is in use.
You should also post signs if machines are out of order such as elevators. This will prevent a person from using machines and equipment that are not working properly, which poses its own safety concerns.
Provide Proper Safety Tools
An accident will be waiting to happen if employees are not given the proper tools and equipment to help them be safe while working. Make sure they have safety glasses, helmets, steel-toed-boots, properly running machines, and anything else necessary for keeping them safe.
Conduct Regular Checks on Machines and Equipment
Always check to make sure machines and equipment are functioning properly. Accidents can occur from using machines that are not up to par. Machines and equipment can be anything from elevators, computers, electrical cords, and copier machines etc.
Keep Workspaces Clean
Encourage employees to keep all areas clean and neat. This includes tidying chords, or moving things out of the way that are easy to trip over and run into.
